Fat Llama became Hygglo on Nov 24th. Why, when and what?

On November 24, Fat Llama fully became Hygglo. Here's what changed – and what it means for you. In short: New name, lower fees – but the same platform and team.

What was Fat Llama?

Fat Llama was the UK's largest peer-to-peer rental platform, founded in London in early 2016 by Chaz Englander, Rosie Dallas, and Owen Turner-Major. After leaving their corporate jobs, the founders spent eight weeks renovating a co-working space in London, where they struggled to rent 'single-use' items such as power tools, tile-cutters, and industrial vacuums. This struggle sparked the idea for Fat Llama.

Fat Llama was a platform that helped people earn money by renting out the things they didn't use every day and rent the things they needed, when they needed them. Listing items was completely free, and everything was insured. With a simple motto "Things should be used", Fat Llama believed in the potential of the sharing economy to create a positive global impact on the environment.

Since then the company grew outside of UK and in 2022 Fat Llama joined forces with Hygglo, the biggest peer-to-peer rental marketplace in the nordics. By bringing the two platforms together under the Hygglo brand, we expanded our reach across Europe while continuing to build toward the same mission: making access better than ownership and changing consumer habits for the better.

What is Hygglo? And what does it mean?

Since 2022 Fat Llama has been part of the Hygglo organisation. Hygglo and Fat Llama were sister companies that did the same thing in different countries. Together we are an organisation with the ambition to offer low prices and good security with a focus on positive impact in the world. Our mission is "make it affordable and convenient to get any item, anywhere". Hygglo originated from Stockholm, Sweden and in Swedish being "hygglo" means "to be nice towards others". We think that it is a message that aligns well with the kind of marketplace we want to be and the impact we want to see in the world.

Why not keep Fat Llama and keep two brands?

To be able to become the best peer-to-peer rental service in the world we needed to be able to spread the word about the sharing economy as well as possible. One brand instead of two makes this much easier.

When did this happen?

The change took place on November 24th, 2025.

What changed?

  • Here's the quick summary:
    • • We lowered our fees!
    • • Everyone can now use their account to rent in any of the Hygglo countries
    • • The Hygglo app replaced the Fat Llama app
    • • We adjusted our guarantee

What did I need to do?

Not much. fatllama.com completely moved to hygglo.com. Everything continues to work the same as before.

If you used the app (which we highly recommend) you needed to install the Hygglo app instead of Fat Llama. The new Hygglo app was published Nov 17th.

If you had any links going to fatllama.com we really appreciated that you updated them to hygglo.com. That helps the search engines to find us and for you to get more rentals.

Did the fees change to the Hygglo fees - i.e. cheaper?

Yes! From the previous fees (25% lender commission + 25% borrower fee), we changed to the Hygglo model of 20%+10%. That means we lowered the total combined fees by approximately 40%.

For some categories that are higher risk (such as Cameras) the borrower fee maintains at 25%.

    Did the guarantee change?

Yes, we aligned our coverage across markets! With over a million rentals on multiple markets, we adjusted our coverage according to our data of what our users actually need. We wanted a coverage that covers as many as possible, without driving unnecessarily high fees. For example, covering very high value equipment was increasing costs for everyone else who didn't need such a high coverage. In order to lower our fees, we got our coverage in line with what the majority need:

    • • Film & Photo - £10,000
    • • Vehicles - £30,000 (only trailers for now in the UK)
    • • General insurance - £3,000

These levels cover almost every rental on the platform, while enabling lower fees for you.

Does this mean that I can lend and borrow things between countries?

Yes - this means that your account can be used in any country where Hygglo operates, i.e. Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom, United States, Finland, Denmark and Canada. A Londoner travelling to Stockholm can rent a pushchair using their already verified account.
