Description
Our favorite lens set, these 7Artisans lenses, shout personality and amazing build quality! The 7Artisans Spectrum 85mm f/1.4 is a manual focus prime lens primarily designed for portraiture and shallow depth-of-field effects in both photography and videography. Here's a focus on its video-related characteristics: Bokeh and Depth of Field: Wide f/1.4 Aperture: The ultra-wide maximum aperture of f/1.4 is a significant asset for video. It allows for creating a very shallow depth of field, beautifully isolating the subject from the background with a smooth and creamy bokeh. This is highly desirable for cinematic-looking interviews, narrative scenes, and product shots where subject isolation is key. Smooth Bokeh: The lens is designed with a 13-blade diaphragm, contributing to a circular and pleasing out-of-focus rendering (bokeh), which is visually appealing in video backgrounds and transitions. Image Characteristics: Sharpness and Detail: While being a fast lens, the 85mm Spectrum aims for good sharpness in the focus plane, allowing for detailed rendering of the subject in video. Color Rendition: The "Spectrum" designation suggests a focus on accurate and natural color rendition, which is important for video to maintain realistic skin tones and overall scene aesthetics. Flare Control: Multi-layer coatings are applied to the lens elements to minimize flare and ghosting, which can be particularly noticeable when shooting video with strong light sources in the frame. Smooth Aperture Ring: The lens features a de-clicked aperture ring, which is a significant advantage for video. This allows for silent and smooth aperture adjustments during recording without jarring steps in exposure, enabling seamless transitions in brightness and depth of field. Build Quality and Handling: Solid Construction: Typically, 7Artisans lenses feature a solid, all-metal build, which provides durability for video production environments. Compact and Lightweight: Compared to some autofocus 85mm lenses, the manual focus design often allows for a more compact and lightweight form factor, which can be beneficial for handheld shooting or when using gimbals for video. Considerations for Video: In summary, the 7Artisans Spectrum 85mm f/1.4 lens offers video shooters a fast aperture for shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh, coupled with manual control over focus and aperture for cinematic effects. While the manual operation requires more user input, it provides creative flexibility and can be a valuable tool for specific video applications, particularly those prioritizing a shallow depth of field and deliberate focus control.
